Anime Herald: You used to watch Digimon when you were growing up. Do you remember how you felt during the original casting sessions for Digimon?
Megumi Han: When I watched Digimon as a child I never expected, or even dreamed, of being cast in the series. Digimon is a franchise that affected my life. Now, being cast in a series like this is changing my life once again. It’s a life-changing series for me. Every time I get involved with a series, I think, “This could be my last chance to be involved.” Happily, I was given another chance.
The picture on the left (below) is me as a child. The picture on the right (Editor’s note: later in the interview) is from the recent Tokyo Game Show. These pictures went viral. There was actually a news article. That’s the kind of life-changing opportunity that I was talking about. Gekkomon made me realize that a dream will come true, but that’s not the end of it. There’s more waiting.
Anime Herald: Do you have any fun stories from any of the Digimon recording sessions?
Megumi Han: On occasions, in the recording booth, we’ll get these legendary Digimon voice actors coming in for a guest appearance. I’ll just fangirl. It takes me back to my childhood.
Anime Herald: Any particular favorites?
Megumi Han: Toshiko Fujita as Tai and Chika Sakamoto as Agumon. It was really special to get to meet them.
Anime Herald: Digimon Beatbreak is the next evolution of the series. What would you like our readers to know about it?
Megumi Han: What’s new in this series is that Digimon are born out of your emotions. It teaches you how to face yourself, in good ways and bad. That means that Digimon are not always shown in a good light. They kind of reflect the dark side of society, the dark side of you. We don’t shy away from that in the series. Maybe the person watching the series will be able to love themselves better. Having said that, I think it is a series you can just watch and enjoy.
Anime Herald: You have talked about doing breathing exercises in character to prepare for recording sessions. How do you manage to breathe like Gekkomon?
Megumi Han: I don’t do anything particular for Gekkomon. It’s because when I hear the other characters’ voices, I become Gekkomon, I breathe like Gekkomon, so I don’t have to do anything special.
What I am concerned about is that I have no idea what kind of evolution Gekkomon is going to take. What that will entail, I have no idea. I am getting myself ready for the evolution to come.
Anime Herald: Do you have any questions for us?
Megumi Han: I want to ask “Do you all love Digimon?”
Anime Herald: I just think they’re kawaii. They’re cute.
Megumi Han: This franchise has been around so long. Throughout the eras, fans have looked for something, hoped for something in Digimon. Whatever the era, the franchise has existed for the fans. I hope you enjoy this new series. I hope the viewers and fans get a lot out of it.
