Gekijoban Mononoke Daisansho: Hebigami will begin screening on May 29 in Japan. The first two films in the Mononoke film trilogy, Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain and Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II – The Ashes of Rage, opened in Japan in July 2024 and March 2025, respectively. Both titles were released on Netflix internationally.

The trilogy sees the enigmatic Medicine Seller dealing with supernatural threats in the Ouku, the inner palace where the Edo emperor’s harem resides. It is a follow-up to the 2007 TV anime Mononoke, a spin-off of the “Goblin Cat” episodes of 2006’s horror anime anthology Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, and continues to feature distinctive visuals like its predecessor.

The first Mononoke movie was announced in June 2022 at the TV series’ 15th anniversary event and was originally supposed to be out in 2023. Takahiro Sakurai was the voice of the Medicine Seller in the TV anime, but was replaced by Hiroshi Kamiya in the films due to a scandal.
