Anime Herald: What were your initial impressions when you encountered Farming Life in Another World for the first time?
Atsushi Abe: When I first read the series, I thought it had a mellow time flow. Although the world itself is brutal and unforgiving, Hiraku surviving in it, starting with a small hut and gradually growing it into a large village, was an interesting storyline for me.
Hiromi Sueta: When I first saw the title Farming Life in Another World, I thought it was going to be another isekai with a reincarnated, overpowered hero. Once I read it, I realized the main character, Hiraku, just has a healthy body and one strong piece of farming equipment. He worked hard and built a life up from zero. I thought it was a unique approach to isekai. Although there are a lot of girls, it is a harem series, the main focus is on Hiraku’s building up the village and the slow life they live.

Anime Herald: If you were to live in the world of Farming Life in Another World, what
would be the first crop you’d like to grow?
Atsushi Abe: That’s a very hard question. Personally, since I like fruits, I think I would grow apples.
Anime Herald: Do you have a favorite type of apple?
Atsushi Abe: There’s a Japanese apple called a Fuji apple.
Anime Herald: There are thousands of different types of apples, so it is fun to try new ones.
Atsushi Abe: I think that’s exactly true!
(Editor’s note: Some apples are stranger than others.)
Anime Herald: What would you like our readers to know about Farming Life in Another World?
Atsushi Abe: As Sueta-san said, it’s unlike other series, where the main character has an overpowered cheat ability, this takes a different approach to the isekai genre. Obviously, there are all of these girls. There are harem aspects to it. The main focal point is how Hiraku grows the village, step-by-step. It’s almost a family-friendly series that you can watch with your kids, you can watch it with your parents. I would like to let people know you can watch it with anyone.
Hiromi Sueta: Farming Life in Another World has a lot of monsters that show up, like Zabuton the spider, or Kuro the wolf. I feel that in the first season, the monsters had a lot of the appeal to the viewers.
In season two, even more monsters will be added to the roster. One of them is the fairy of the tree stump. Unlike the other monsters, she’s voiced. I feel that adds a new appeal to the monsters. I want people to see and enjoy the new aspects of the monsters.
Anime Herald: Can you share any stories from the recording process for Farming Life in Another World?
Atsushi Abe: In the first season, especially in the first few episodes, I am the only one that speaks. Even Kuro is treated as a dog. In general, the main character has a lot of lines. But in season two, the roster increased a lot. There are thirty people in the recording room. It’s packed. But even now, I’m doing most of the talking.
It’s a very warm recording atmosphere, where I’m the one speaking and everyone else is watching along and looking after me. Once we are done, we go eat dinner together afterwards.

Anime Herald: Do you ever specifically try to eat the things you grew in the episode?
Atsushi Abe: I couldn’t get a chance to eat some of the food we grew in the show. There are some very good looking crops that I would love to try.
Anime Herald: Is there anything you are particularly interested in seeing here in Boston?
Atsushi Abe: Yesterday, I went to the North End, with all of the brick buildings. I also visited the MFA (Museum of Fine Arts) and Harvard. I also had some clam chowder and some lobster. I had been looking forward to all of these things.
Anime Herald: Are there any fun stories from the production side of Farming Life in Another World that you would care to share?
Hiromi Sueta: It overlaps with the recording process. In order to add realism to the character’s reactions to a certain fruit in season two, the director purchased juice from that fruit. The voice actors had never tried it before. You don’t see that very often.
Anime Herald: Did you enjoy the juice?
Atsushi Abe: It’s very hard to describe.

Anime Herald: I understand. Do you have any questions for us?
Atsushi Abe: I was wondering what the foreign audience finds appealing about Farming Life in Another World?
Anime Herald: I am going to separate this into two different audiences. One audience enjoys the calm, peaceful slice of life. There are no cell phones, no screens. They can enjoy a quiet farming world.
The other audience enjoys harem shows. They like seeing all of the girls and the interactions between them.
Atsushi Abe: Thank you.
Anime Herald: You are quite welcome.
Hiromi Sueta: Who is your favorite character?
Anime Herald: I have two. Zabuton is obviously best girl. I also like the god who had to make a telephone call to get the farming tool approved. I enjoyed that even God has to deal with bureaucracy.
Hiromi Sueta: Thank you.
Anime Herald: Thank you both very much.
