GKIDS is hosting a special EVANGELION 30th Movie Fest event this summer, where it will screen the 1997 Evangelion:Death (True)² & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion anime films in North American theatres on July 21, 2026 and July 22, 2026. The screenings were announced in commemoration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary.

GKIDS describes both Neon Genesis Evangelion anime films as:
Evangelion:Death (True)² & Rebirth
Opening March 15, 1997, this is the original film adaptation of the TV anime NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, helmed by Director Hideaki ANNO and airing from 1995-1996. It is composed of EVANGELION:DEATH, a compilation of episodes 1-24 out of the original 26 episode series, as well as EVANGELION:REBIRTH, a portion of the alternative ending of episode 25, “Air.” Further airings evolved into the version known as EVANGELION:DEATH (TRUE)² & REBIRTH, which is now being screened outside Japan in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the series.
The End of Evangelion
This final movie version was created as an alternative ending to the NEON GENESIS EVANGELION TV series, remaking the final two episodes from the series. SEELE plans an attack on NERV after failing to create a man-made Third Impact. After reaffirming both her own and her mother’s existence in a state of despair, Asuka returns and begins the counterattack. However, new enemies descend from the heavens. Meanwhile, Shinji witnesses the horrifying wreckage of Asuka’s EVA-02 while piloting EVA-01. Mass production models surround EVA-01 and perform a solemn ceremony. What does it mean to complete a human heart?
The original Neon Genesis Evangelion TV anime series, which was created and directed by Hideaki Anno, began broadcasting in 1995 and were produced at the now-defunct Gainax. It was followed by Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth in March 1997 and The End of Evangelion, which was released in Japan on July 19, 1997. The series has also spawned other media like manga, video games, and a novel series.
A decade after the release of The End of Evangelion, a new tetralogy film series from Studio khara was launched under the title Rebuild of Evangelion, starting the debut of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone in 2007. The new film series concluded in 2021 with Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.
A new Evangelion anime series, which was first announced at the EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION event, will be co-produced by khara and CloverWorks.
The 1990s Evangelion entries have been available for streaming on Netflix (which has Evangelion:Death (True)² & Rebirth instead of the original Death & Rebirth version). The khara-produced Evangelion anime films are available on Prime Video.
Tickets for EVANGELION 30TH Movie Fest are now on sale and can be purchased on GKIDS’ official website or at participating theatre box offices.
