Popular Japanese mascot Chiikawa is getting their own anime movie, titled Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu (Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island) and set for a summer 2026 release in Japan.
A visual shows Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi in a boat, illuminated by the moonlight beaming through a cave’s ceiling opening. A giant face, whose owner is shown clearly in a commemorative illustration from Chiikawa creator Nagano, can be seen in the water.
Nagano is penning the script for the movie, which is produced by CygamesPictures. Kei Oikawa (Umamusume: Pretty Derby Season 1 and 2) is directing.

Chiikawa began as a character of a webcomic on X (then Twitter). The movie is inspired by a storyline that was originally posted on X from March 2023 to November 2023.
Chiikawa is currently a popular mascot that has inspired social media and LINE stamps, goods, and a Doga Kobo-produced short anime, which began in 2022 and has almost 300 episodes as of November 2025. The character is a three-time winner of the Grand Prix at the Japanese Character Award, taking the award in 2022, 2024, and 2025.
