The Ghost in the Shell TV anime is scheduled to begin airing in July. The announcement was accompanied by a visual dedicated to Major Motoko Kusanagi, as well as a trailer that gives us a look at the Major, Batou, and Aramaki.

It was also revealed that Taisei Iwasaki (Metallic Rouge, Blood Blockade Battlefront) is composing the music for Section 9’s new outing with Ryo Konishi and Yuki Kanesaka. Iwasaki is the sound director as well.

It was previously known that The Ghost in the Shell, which hews closer to Shirow Masamune‘s manga with its character designs than previous anime, would run in the new Kaanival 11 block that’s available on the Kansai Television and Fuji Television networks. Titles in the block are shown on Tuesdays at 11 PM.

The original cyberpunk manga made its debut in the May 1989 issue of Young Magazine Kaizokuban, a special supplement of Kodansha’s seinen magazine Young Magazine. Kodansha USA’s synopsis partially reads:

Deep into the 21st century, the line between man and machine has been inexorably blurred as humans rely on the enhancement of mechanical implants and robots are upgraded with human tissue. In this rapidly converging landscape, cyborg superagent Major Motoko Kusanagi is charged to track down the craftiest and most dangerous terrorists and cybercriminals, including “ghost hackers” who are capable of exploiting the human/machine interface and reprogramming humans to become puppets to carry out the hackers’ criminal ends. When Major Kusanagi tracks the cybertrail of one such master hacker, the Puppeteer, her quest leads her into a world beyond information and technology where the very nature of consciousness and the human soul are turned upside down.

The Ghost in the Shell has inspired a number of previous anime: Mamoru Oshii‘s Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence movies; the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series and movie; the Ghost in the Shell: Arise films, which feature a younger version of Motoko; and the 3DCG Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, which is set after Stand Alone Complex

The previous anime were produced by Production I.G, with SOLA DIGITAL ARTS assisting for SAC_2045
